Safety tips for aerial work platform operators

Are you an aerial work platform operator? Then you know how important safety rules are.

Safety measures are a series of actions that must be followed closely so as to maintain the smooth operation of the machinery.

However, there are many hazards associated with aerial lifts that not only damage the equipment or property, but may also lead to injury – or worse: falls, tip-overs, or electrocution can happen in almost any workplace if safety measures are not properly followed.

Below are the safety measures for operating aerial work platforms in order to properly prepare, protect yourself and also check the machine after your work.

Quality control of AWP before, during and after your work

GEPA LIFT’s articulated aerial platforms are distinguished for their detail in design, quality of construction and the ease of handling, while they meet the highest standards.

In any case, it is very important to check their functions before starting as well as after completing your work. Here’s what to look out for:

  • Before using the AWP, check the machine for any leaks and damages.
  • The equipment should be well maintained and in good condition, checked by an authorized workshop.
  • Always monitor the machine’s function controls and warning lights – if you notice any abnormality, stop operating.
  • After your work is done, inspect the equipment – only when the basket is at rest.
  • Any repairs to the AWP should be carried out by the manufacturer or by authorized workshops.

safety precautions for working with aerial work platforms

Working with an AWP – Safety precautions before you start

  • If you are using an aerial work platform for the first time, make sure you have received the appropriate training and that you are familiar with its handling.
  • Before operating the machine, make sure there is no one under the basket, because there is a risk of a tool or other material falling.
  • The helmet and other PPE are necessary both when climbing to the basket and when handling the basket.
  • Wear appropriate work clothes without exposed parts. Any accessories on hands, fingers and neck are prohibited.
  • In addition, the seat belt is necessary while handling or working on the basket.

How do I operate an aerial work platform? What is prohibited?

Safety rules for working with an AWP must be taken seriously by every operator and worker.

Whether you are new to this field or have years of experience, these safety measures must be followed dutifully to ensure the smooth operation of the machine, your safety, and the safety of the people around you.

Keep the following rules in mind at all times:

  • Climbing up and down to the basket is prohibited while the machine is operating.
  • Stay focused on your handling.
  • Drinking alcohol before and during work is strictly prohibited.
  • Do not eat or smoke while operating n AWP.
  • Do not show off or make jokes when operating heavy machinery.
  • Before each operation, the operator should make judgments and decisions based on their own safety and the safety of the AWP.
  • It is strictly forbidden to use any type of flame or smoke when checking the oil level.

Safety measures for operating aerial work platforms – Everything you need to know

Articulating boom lifts are heavy-duty machines and you need to take extra care when working to achieve trouble-free operation.

Here are some of the key features to check:

  • Do not use the machine for tasks other than those for which it was manufactured and approved.
  • The operating room on both the ground control and the basket control should be kept clear of any oil or obstruction, to avoid accidents.
  • To ensure stability and prevent tipping, it is important to properly position aerial lifts on level ground. If the ground is uneven or inclined, be sure to engage the brakes and use wheel chocks to prevent the lift from rolling. Additionally, utilize outriggers if they are available.
  • Make sure there are no obstacles (walls, trees, power lines etc.).
  • If any different noise is noticed, cease all operations.
  • If another operator replaces you, inform them of any observations.
  • Aerial work platforms must not operate in winds over 45 km/h.
  • AWP must be equipped with an emergency stop button in all operating positions.
